Pure Maths 1 (P1) is the compulsory paper (out of a total of two papers) required for Cambridge International’s AS-Level Mathematics course (course code 9709). Please see the introduction to AS-Level Mathematics for information on the overall programme, choices of papers, prerequisites, etc.

The Cambridge International Pure Maths 1 course covers a number of fundamental topics in mathematics, including:

- Coordinate geometry
- Surds and indices
- Quadratics
- Inequalities
- Transformation
- Functions and graphs
- Binomial Theorems
- Differentiation
- Integration
- Sequences

Any further studies in mathematics will be greatly facilitated by a thorough grasp of these concepts.

It is important to note that examination questions tend to combine a number of concepts. It is therefore important that you go beyond the skill of solving problems that test a single concept in isolation, and develop the ability to draw on a number of different concepts at once in order to solve problems you have not seen before. Of course, this is a skill which is important for life in general, and for your future professional life as well; it is not only required to do well in formal exams!
